🖤 Untold Stories: Celebrating Iconic Black Women in Lewisham

I

In 2023, I had the honour of co-creating one of three powerful murals unveiled in Brockley as part of the Untold Storiesprogramme, funded by the Mayor of London. This project was about visibility, legacy, and truth—celebrating phenomenal Black women whose stories have shaped Lewisham but too often go unheard

.The women we honoured were chosen by the local community:

  • Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, clean air campaigner and mother of Ella Roberta

  • Mavis Best, activist against racist policing and discrimination

  • Kristina and Sadé Alleyne, founders of the internationally acclaimed Alleyne Dance

I collaborated alongside fellow artists Roxanne Williams and Jelly—three women of colour painting stories that matter. The process was deeply communal: volunteers prepped walls, documented the journey, and sparked conversations about history, identity, and representation. This mural isn’t just paint on brick—it’s a tribute to courage, creativity, and the power of Black women to transform space and narrative. It lives in Brockley, but its message reaches far beyond.“We painted not just to be seen, but to be remembered.”
